Squad numbers arrived with the Premier League's 1993–94 season; before that shirts went 1–11 by position. Each number shows who held it each season, with appearances and goals in all competitions.
From 1939 to 1993 the shirt went with the position: 1 goalkeeper, 2 and 3 full-backs, 4–6 half-backs, 7–11 forwards, and later 9 centre-forward, 7 and 11 wingers. Nobody owned a number, so the record is match by match. Wikipedia's final articles list both XIs with shirt numbers; here is every United final to 1992–93.
